Downeast Series
Rooted in Maine
Built to Dana Bourgeois’ exacting standards, the Downeast Series offers a new entry point into the high-fidelity sound of Bourgeois guitars. Borrowed from the seafaring vernacular of coastal Maine—home to the Bourgeois workshop—the term Downeast evokes a tradition of craft, resilience, and innovation. It’s a nod to our roots and the shared journey that brought Bourgeois’ renowned craftsmanship, tone, and artistry to a broader community of players.
A New Workshop. One Standard.
The Downeast story began several years ago with the establishment of Bourgeois’ second workshop, staffed by highly skilled luthiers dedicated to handcrafting guitars under the close guidance of the team in Lewiston, Maine. Conceived as an extension of the Bourgeois tradition, this workshop was built on a shared commitment to precision, consistency, and tonal excellence.
Through regular visits and ongoing collaboration, Dana Bourgeois and Master Luthier James Witkus have carefully instilled Bourgeois’ renowned system of voicing—the art of tuning guitar tops for optimal tonal response—into each luthier’s core skillset. This process, central to the Bourgeois sound, ensures that every instrument responds with clarity, balance, and musicality.
After years of hands-on instruction, refinement, and the development of numerous prototypes, the Downeast Series emerged—marking a new era in which Bourgeois’ boutique quality and signature tone are made accessible to more players than ever before.
Shaping the Sound of Generations
Dana Bourgeois began crafting guitars in 1975, inspired by a passion for perfection and a deep respect for traditional luthiery. For more than 50 years, his innovative designs and attention to detail have set the standard in the world of acoustic guitars. From his groundbreaking voicing techniques to his dedication to sourcing the finest tonewoods, Dana has shaped the sound of generations of musicians.
